Discover a Different Side of Diving Mahahual
Mahahual offers far more than the typical Caribbean reef dive. While many divers visit the same shallow reef areas, we focus on helping divers discover a different side of diving in Mahahual and the Mesoamerican Reef.
From turtles, tarpon and grouper to schooling fish, reef predators, dramatic coral formations and rarely visited reef structures, our dives are designed to show you more of what this incredible coastline has to offer.
Many of the encounters featured in our videos are filmed on dives from shore around Mahahual, not just at remote destinations. Through local knowledge, small groups and access to areas beyond the most commonly visited dive sites, we are often able to experience marine life and underwater environments that many divers never get the opportunity to see.
For qualified divers, DPVs, deeper reef exploration and technical diving experience can open up even more possibilities. Whether you're looking for a relaxed guided reef dive or a more adventurous exploration-focused experience, we can tailor dives to suit your interests, training and experience level.
Expand your diving skills with our PADI Deep Diver, PADI DPV and PADI TecRec courses, designed to help you explore Mahahual's deeper reefs with confidence.
Whether you're looking for vibrant coral reefs, dramatic walls, lionfish hunting, remote atolls or underwater caves, explore diving in Mahahual, Uvero, Xahuayxol, Xcalak, Banco Chinchorro and Cave & Cavern Diving

For suitably qualified divers, DPVs, deeper reef exploration and technical diving provide access to remote sections of reef rarely visited on standard guided dives, revealing an entirely different side of the Mesoamerican Reef.

Diving Uvero Reefs
Located north of Mahahual, Uvero is known for its unique reef structure, including coral ridges, swim-throughs and a constantly changing underwater landscape. Generally shallower than many of our other dive locations, most dives are conducted at depths of less than 18 metres, making it suitable for a wide range of certified divers.
The combination of reef formations, sandy channels and natural swim-throughs creates an engaging dive from start to finish. Uvero is also one of our favourite locations for guided lionfish hunting, offering regular opportunities to help remove this invasive species while exploring the reef.
Watch the video below to explore the swim-throughs, reef structure and marine life that make Uvero one of our favourite local dive sites.
Diving Xahuayxol Reefs
Located south of Mahahual, Xahuayxol offers some of the most pristine reef diving in the region. With outstanding visibility, beautiful black coral formations and healthy reef structure, it provides a diving experience that feels remarkably untouched. Divers regularly encounter sea turtles, barracuda, lobster and large schools of reef fish, while dolphins are occasionally seen cruising the reef. Xahuayxol is also one of our favourite locations for guided lionfish hunting dives and reef exploration dive. Combining exciting underwater exploration with efforts to protect the Mesoamerican Reef.

Diving Xcalak Reefs
Located south of Mahahual near the Belize border, Xcalak offers access to some of the most remote and lightly-dived sections of the Mesoamerican Reef. Known for its dramatic reef formations, healthy coral systems and abundant marine life, Xcalak provides a truly unique Caribbean diving experience.
The area is particularly well known for encounters with large tarpon, seasonal eagle rays and offers some of the best opportunities to see manatees anywhere along the Mexican Caribbean coast. Combined with impressive reef structure, excellent visibility and relatively low diving pressure, Xcalak gives divers the chance to experience a quieter, more untouched side of the Caribbean. With relatively few divers visiting the area, the reefs retain a wild and natural character that can be difficult to find elsewhere in the Mexican Caribbean.
Whether you're exploring the reef formations, searching for marine life or simply enjoying the pristine underwater environment, Xcalak remains one of our favourite destinations for reef diving in southern Quintana Roo.

Diving Banco Chinchorro Atoll
Located approximately 30 km offshore from Mahahual, Banco Chinchorro is the largest coral atoll in Mexico and one of the most remarkable dive destinations in the Caribbean. Protected as a Biosphere Reserve, it is renowned for its healthy coral reefs, exceptional visibility and abundant marine life.
Divers regularly encounter nurse sharks, large barracuda, sea turtles, eagle rays and huge schools of fish throughout the atoll. The remote location and limited number of visitors help preserve the area's natural beauty and create a truly unique diving experience.
Banco Chinchorro is also famous for its shipwrecks, diverse reef systems and the opportunity to experience some of the healthiest sections of the Mesoamerican Reef. Whether you're interested in marine life encounters, underwater photography or simply exploring pristine reefs, Banco Chinchorro offers unforgettable diving for certified divers.

Cave and Cavern Diving
Mahahual Underwater Explorers is actively exploring and documenting underwater cave systems along the Costa Maya. While much of this work remains in the exploration phase, discoveries such as the freshwater sea cave featured in the video below highlight the potential for future guided cave diving opportunities closer to Mahahual.
As new cave systems are discovered and assessed, our goal is to safely expand the range of unique diving experiences available to qualified cave divers visiting the region.
For now, guided cavern tours, cenote diving and cave diving experiences are available in the Tulum and Playa del Carmen area, home to some of the world's most spectacular underwater cave systems.
