Course Facts
Here's a quick overview of the PADI Self-Reliant Diver course, including the experience required, course duration, what's included and how you'll prepare to develop the skills and confidence to plan and manage your own dives responsibly.

Is the Self-Reliant Diver Course Right for You?
Most divers learn to rely on a buddy. The PADI Self-Reliant Diver course teaches you to become the kind of diver every buddy wants beside them.

This course isn't about encouraging you to dive alone. It's about developing the planning, awareness and confidence to take greater responsibility for your own dive. You'll learn to think ahead, manage your gas, navigate effectively and prepare for situations before they become problems.

It's also my favourite course to teach. Watching experienced divers become calmer, more methodical and more self-sufficient over just two days is incredibly rewarding. The skills you develop don't stay with this certification—they improve every dive you make afterwards.

From underwater photography and remote shore diving to DPV and technical diving, the skills you develop during the PADI Self-Reliant Diver course will make you a stronger, more capable diver and better prepared for every adventure beneath the surface.
Why Choose Mahahual Explorers for Your Self-Reliant Diver Course
I first trained in self-reliant diving more than 15 years ago, before it became a regular PADI specialty. My instructor was one of the original authors of the course, giving me a deeper understanding of its philosophy and purpose than simply teaching the certification requirements.

As a PADI Course Director and Technical Diving Instructor, I teach divers to think ahead, plan carefully and solve problems before they develop. Those same skills are at the heart of the Self-Reliant Diver course, which is why it's still one of my favourite specialties to teach.

Training takes place in small groups, giving you plenty of time to develop independent dive planning, gas management, navigation and self-sufficiency without feeling rushed. The goal isn't simply to earn another certification—it's to become a calmer, more confident and more capable diver every time you enter the water.
The skills you develop during this course will improve every dive you make, whether you're photographing marine life, exploring Mahahual's reefs, diving with a DPV or progressing into technical diving.

Before You Arrive

After booking your course, you'll receive access to PADI eLearning so you can complete the theory before arriving in Mahahual.

Completing your eLearning before you arrive means we can spend less time in the classroom and more time in the water exploring Mahahual's spectacular reef.

During Your Course
You'll begin by completing a dive skills assessment before learning how to configure and use redundant equipment correctly. From there, we'll build the planning, gas management and navigation skills that allow you to dive with greater confidence and independence.

Throughout three open water training dives, you'll put everything into practice. We'll focus on realistic scenarios, problem solving and making good decisions underwater, helping you become calmer, more capable and better prepared for every dive.

By the end of the course, you'll have developed the confidence to plan and manage dives more independently while becoming the kind of diver every buddy wants beside them.
