Visiting Costa Maya on a cruise and want to spend your day underwater?
The Costa Maya cruise port is located beside the small Caribbean town of Mahahual, and when people search for Costa Maya diving, it is really the reefs of Mahahual that they come to dive.
Because cruise-ship visits have limited time ashore, our Costa Maya diving trips stay within the Mahahual reef system, making scuba diving in Mahahual a practical independent shore excursion while still allowing plenty of time to dive and return comfortably around your ship’s schedule.
Mahahual forms part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, with warm Caribbean water, coral formations, sandy channels and abundant tropical marine life. Depending on the site and the day, we may encounter turtles, rays, barracuda, moray eels, lobster and a wide variety of Caribbean reef fish.
Most certified divers can enjoy one or two relaxed reef dives during their Costa Maya port visit.

How Costa Maya Diving With Us Works
We keep the process straightforward and organise the diving around your ship.
1. Send us an enquiry
Tell us your cruise ship, date, number of divers, certification level and what type of diving you are interested in.
2. We confirm availability and price
We'll check your ship's schedule and let you know what diving we can realistically provide during your time in Costa Maya.
3. Confirm your booking
If you're happy to proceed, a 30% deposit confirms the booking in accordance with our Terms & Conditions.
4. Send us your arrival and equipment information
Before your visit we'll ask for your ship's arrival/departure information, when you last dived, certification details and approximate height, weight and shoe size so we can prepare suitable equipment.
5. Meet us in Mahahual
We'll arrange a convenient meeting location outside the Costa Maya cruise port area. We'll complete the required paperwork, sight your certification, confirm equipment sizing and get ready to dive.
6. Go diving
From there, it's time to explore the Mahahual reefs.
After diving, if your ship schedule allows, you can spend some time enjoying Mahahual's boardwalk, beach, restaurants and bars. Alternatively, I can normally drop you back close to the cruise port.

Can I scuba dive in Costa Maya and make it back to my cruise ship on time?
In many cases, yes. We plan cruise-ship diving around your ship’s published arrival and departure times and build in a sensible return buffer. Because ships can arrive late or schedules can change, we confirm the plan with you in advance and only accept a booking when the timing is realistic.
Is scuba diving in Costa Maya available as an independent shore excursion?
Yes. You can book directly with Mahahual Underwater Explorers rather than through the cruise line. Mahahual is the seaside town beside the Costa Maya cruise port, and the local reefs are only a short distance away.
How far is Mahahual from the Costa Maya cruise port?
Mahahual is the small seaside town immediately beside the Costa Maya cruise port area. We arrange a convenient meeting point outside the controlled port entrance and explain exactly where to meet before your visit.
What happens if my cruise ship arrives late or the schedule changes?
Cruise schedules can change, so we plan each booking around the time actually available. If a delay means there is no longer enough time for safe, relaxed diving and a sensible return to the ship, we will adjust the plan where possible.
