What to Expect
When Diving With Us in Mahahual

Whether you are joining us for recreational dives, starting a PADI course or planning a more specialised diving experience, we want everything to feel straightforward before you arrive.

Mahahual Underwater Explorers offers small-group, personalised scuba diving in Mahahual. We take the time to understand your experience, prepare suitable equipment and choose diving that matches your ability, interests and the conditions on the day.

After your Booking is Confirmed!

Once we confirm your booking, we will discuss your diving plans, experience and any equipment you require.

For certified divers, please send us:

  • Your current certification level

  • The date of your last dive

  • Any relevant recent diving experience

  • Whether you will bring your own equipment or require rental equipment​

 

We will need to see your certification card before diving. If you are PADI certified but cannot access your card, send us your full name and date of birth so we can attempt to verify your certification through PADI.

​

Course participants will receive information about any required eLearning, forms, prerequisites and preparation before training begins.

Meeting Arrangements

The day before your activity, we will confirm the meeting time and an agreed location in Mahahual.

If you are staying in Mahahual, we will agree on a convenient local meeting location based on your accommodation and the diving planned.

Equipment Sizes and Fitting

If you need rental equipment, please send us your approximate height, weight and shoe size.

This helps us select suitable equipment before you arrive. Final fitting and adjustments will take place when we meet, and we will make any necessary changes before entering the water.

If you have your own mask, computer or other personal dive equipment, you are welcome to bring it.

Arriving by Cruise Ship

Costa Maya cruise passenger meeting options: meet nearby in Las Casitas or take a taxi to the beach. No collection at the port entrance.

Planning to go scuba diving in Costa Maya during your cruise stop? We welcome cruise passengers to dive with us in Mahahual. When booking, please provide your ship’s name and its scheduled arrival and departure times so we can check what fits comfortably into your visit.

We will plan your diving around the time available, your experience and the expected conditions, allowing a sensible margin for you to return to the port before departure. If your ship’s schedule does not provide enough time for safe, relaxed diving, we will let you know before confirming the activity.

​

Because access around the Costa Maya Port is controlled, we cannot collect guests directly from the port entrance. However, a nearby meeting point in the Las Casitas area can usually be arranged.

​

Please allow enough time to leave the port and reach the agreed meeting point. We will provide clear directions beforehand and help you understand where to go.

Ship time can sometimes differ from local Mahahual time, so we will clearly confirm which time should be followed.

If your ship arrives late, changes its itinerary or is unable to dock, please contact us as soon as possible. We will adjust the arrangements where reasonably possible.

What to Bring

Please bring swimwear, a towel, drinking water, a hat, sunglasses, reef-safe sunscreen, your diving certification card if applicable, and any personal diving equipment you plan to use.

It is best to arrive already wearing your swimwear so we can prepare efficiently and get you into the water without unnecessary delays.

Bring the personal items shown. Please choose reef-safe sunscreen where possible, and consider wearing a light sun shirt, hat and using shade between dives to stay comfortable in the tropical sun.

Payment and Confirmation

We will confirm the price, payment method and booking arrangements with you before your activity.

Payment can be organised between us in advance and must be completed according to our booking Terms and Conditions. Any equipment rental, special gas requirements, transport or other agreed extras will be confirmed before payment.

Please ask if anything is unclear—we want you to know exactly what has been arranged before your diving day.

Diving Conditions in Mahahual

Mahahual offers warm Caribbean water, generally good visibility, short boat journeys and a range of reef sites suitable for different experience levels.

​

Water temperatures are usually around 26–30°C (79–86°F), depending on the season. For most divers, a thick exposure suit is usually unnecessary. Many people are comfortable diving in swimwear and a rash guard, while others prefer a shorty or thin wetsuit for extra comfort on longer dives and added protection from the sun or accidental contact with marine life.

Diving is possible throughout the year, and the best time to visit depends on the experience you are looking for. Summer can be an excellent time for diving, with warm water, long sunny days, fewer visitors and, on many days, excellent visibility. Sargassum can appear along the shoreline during the warmer months, but it usually has little effect on the reef diving.

​

Hurricane season officially runs from June to November, but this does not mean continuous bad weather. Tropical storms are always possible, while winter cold fronts can also bring strong northerly winds and prevent diving for several days. Every season offers something different, so the best time to come depends on the type of diving and experience you want.

​​Safety always comes first. Diving plans may occasionally be adjusted, postponed or cancelled when conditions are unsuitable. If a change becomes necessary, we will keep you informed and discuss the available options with you.

Your Dive Experience

We will begin by checking equipment, confirming paperwork and discussing the plan for the day.

We specialise in small groups and personalised diving. Certified divers are grouped by experience wherever possible, while course participants receive the time and attention they need to build confidence and ability.

​

Before every dive, you will receive a clear briefing covering the site, conditions, maximum depth, dive plan, communication, and entry and exit procedures.

​

Dive sites are selected according to:

  • Weather and sea conditions

  • Diver certification and experience

  • Recent diving activity

  • Group needs

  • Training requirements

  • The type of diving requested

 

If you have not dived recently, feel nervous or have a particular concern, please tell us beforehand so we can plan suitable support.

We want you to feel comfortable, well prepared and able to enjoy your time underwater, with personal attention and time to settle into each dive.
