The PADI Night Diver course teaches you how to plan and conduct night dives with confidence. You'll learn to navigate in darkness, communicate using dive lights and maintain awareness when visual references are limited.
Across three training dives, you will experience Mahahual's reef as it changes from twilight to complete darkness and develop skills that will make every future night dive safer and more enjoyable.

Is the Night Diver Course Right for You?
Night diving opens up a part of Mahahual’s reef that most divers never see. As daylight fades, familiar dive sites change, nocturnal creatures emerge and the colours caught in your dive light appear even brighter against the surrounding darkness.
If you’ve completed your PADI Open Water Diver course, this specialty can be your introduction to diving after sunset. If you completed a Night Adventure Dive during your Advanced Open Water course, it gives you the opportunity to build on that experience and further develop your night-diving skills. Either way, you’ll become more confident, capable and aware underwater after dark.
Night diving isn’t simply about taking a dive light underwater or making the same dive with the lights switched off. Darkness changes your visual references, communication and navigation. You’ll develop the awareness, planning and practical skills needed to remain oriented, maintain contact with your buddy and use your lights effectively—skills that will benefit every night dive you make in the future.

I’ve completed thousands of night dives, making me one of Mahahual’s most experienced night-diving instructors. That experience helps me anticipate the small details that make night dives safer and more enjoyable—from choosing the right entry and exit points to helping students remain relaxed as daylight disappears.
As Mahahual’s only permanent PADI Course Director and an experienced cave-diving instructor and cenote guide, I spend a great deal of time in environments where dependable lighting, careful navigation and good awareness are essential. I bring that same attention to planning and equipment into every Night Diver course.
Reliable lights make a real difference. Because of my cave-diving and cenote-guiding work, we have a selection of high-quality primary and backup dive lights available. Every student is provided with two dive lights and a dive computer for use throughout the course at no additional cost.
Courses are taught in small groups with personalised instruction and plenty of time to prepare, ask questions and review each dive. The aim is not simply to complete three dives—it is to help you become a confident, capable night diver who can enjoy diving after dark wherever your future travels take you.
Before You Arrive
Once your booking is confirmed, you'll receive immediate access to your PADI Night Diver eLearning.
Completing the theory before you arrive means we can spend less time studying on site and more time preparing for and enjoying your night dives in Mahahual.
Before the course, we’ll confirm your certification, complete the required paperwork and discuss any previous night-diving experience. If you have questions about the training, equipment or what to expect after dark, I’m always happy to help.
During Your Course
Across three training dives, you’ll progressively build the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to safely enjoy diving after dark.
You’ll learn how to plan night dives, organise and use your lights, communicate with your buddy and navigate when your usual visual references are limited. You’ll also practise night entries, descents, ascents and exits while becoming more comfortable and aware underwater.
With small groups, there’s plenty of time to prepare for each dive, ask questions and review what you’ve learned afterwards, ensuring you leave with genuine understanding rather than simply another certification.
What You'll Learn
During your PADI Night Diver Course, you'll learn to:

Select, organise and use primary and backup dive lights.

Communicate clearly using dive-light signals.

Navigate using a compass and natural references in darkness.

Make controlled entries, descents, ascents and exits at night.

Respond calmly to common problems, including light failure.

Continue Your PADI Diving Journey
For many divers, the Night Diver course opens up a completely new way to experience familiar dive sites. The awareness, navigation and planning skills you develop will also improve your confidence during daylight dives.
If you’re a PADI Open Water Diver, the Night Adventure Dive completed during this course can count as one of the five Adventure Dives required for the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course. This reduces the number of additional dives you’ll need to complete for that certification.
The Night Diver certification can also count as one of the five PADI Specialty certifications required for the Master Scuba Diver rating. Wherever your diving journey takes you, this course gives you the skills and confidence to continue exploring after daylight disappears.
