Why Xahuayxol Scuba Diving Is So Special

Some of the best scuba diving in the southern Mexican Caribbean isn't found where the crowds go. On Sunday, we headed south from Mahahual to Xahuayxol, one of our favourite hidden gems, for a day of crystal-clear scuba diving and lionfish hunting.

Just 30 minutes from Mahahual by road and only a 10-minute boat ride to our first dive site, Xahuayxol is a place that still feels like the Caribbean of years gone by. Quiet beaches, swaying palms, crystal-clear water and hardly another person in sight. It's the kind of place where life slows down before you've even stepped onto the boat, and we're lucky to still have places like this to explore.

Joining the Mahahual Explorers team was Shane, a local lionfish-slaying legend. With our dive gear loaded and lionfish slings ready, we set off with two goals: explore one of the region's most beautiful reefs and remove as many invasive lionfish as we could.

As soon as we descended, the visibility opened up beneath us. It wasn't just the clarity of the water that stood out—it was the silence. No crowds of divers, no line of boats overhead, just the steady rhythm of our own bubbles drifting towards the surface.

The reef itself was spectacular.

Towering barrel sponges rose from the reef, beautiful black coral colonies swayed gently in the current, and colourful hard corals stretched across the seafloor. Schools of barracuda cruised effortlessly through the blue while juvenile groupers watched cautiously from the protection of the reef. It felt wild, healthy and wonderfully untouched.

Crystal-clear water and healthy reefs are why we keep coming back to Xahuayxol.

At Mahahual Explorers, we're not interested in crowded tourist dive sites or rushing divers through packed schedules. We'd rather spend our time exploring places like Xahuayxol, where you can slow down, enjoy the reef and experience the Caribbean as it really is. Quiet, unspoilt and full of life.

Of course, we weren't just there to admire the scenery. Lionfish remain one of the biggest threats to Caribbean reefs. With very few natural predators, they reproduce quickly and consume huge numbers of juvenile reef fish. Removing almost 20 lionfish won't solve the problem, but every one we take off the reef gives native species a better chance to thrive and helps protect this incredible ecosystem.

Removing lionfish is a small action that makes a real difference to Caribbean reefs.

By the time we surfaced, we'd removed almost 20 lionfish and spent another unforgettable day exploring one of the most peaceful corners of the southern Mexican Caribbean.

Back on shore, loading the truck beneath the palms with another successful day behind us, it was another reminder of why we love diving here. There are no crowds, no packed dive boats and no rush to the next site. Just a beautiful stretch of Caribbean coastline and another unforgettable day spent exploring it.
